What is Macrographic Testing?

Macrographic Testing is a destructive metallurgical method used to examine the internal features of a weld. It involves sectioning a sample, polishing the cross-section, and etching the surface to reveal:

  • Weld geometry — bead shape, reinforcement, throat size, bead sequence
  • Penetration — depth of root penetration and fusion
  • Fusion quality — whether the weld fused properly to the base metal and between passes
  • Heat‑affected zone — width and characteristics
  • Internal defects — porosity, cracks, slag inclusions, lack of fusion, lack of penetration, undercut, overlap
